CMA Eligibility: Education & Experience Requirements

Before registering for the U.S. CMA (Certified Management Accountant) program, it’s important to understand the academic and professional criteria you’ll need to meet. These requirements are set by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and are essential for earning your CMA credential.

Educational Requirements

To qualify for the CMA, you must have either of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

  • OR A professional certification recognized as equivalent by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)

While students from commerce, accounting, finance, or economics backgrounds are naturally aligned, candidates from any discipline are eligible — as long as their degree is from a recognized institution.

If you’re still completing your undergraduate studies, you can begin your CMA exam process and submit your degree proof later to obtain certification.
Note: To receive the official CMA certification, you must hold a completed degree.

Work Experience Requirements

To become a certified CMA, you must complete two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management.

The work experience should involve relevant responsibilities such as:

  • Financial planning and analysis

  • Budgeting and forecasting

  • Cost and performance management

  • Decision support and internal control

You can gain this experience before or within seven years after passing both parts of the CMA exam — making it flexible for students and early-career professionals.

“With Simandhar Education and Becker’s structured guidance, you can meet these global requirements confidently and accelerate your journey to becoming a Certified Management Accountant.”
